Athlete of the Month

December 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Ben Sathre and Linda Keller are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for December 2011.

Sathre, a senior at the University of St. Thomas, is honored for winning the men's title at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Winneconne, Wisconsin last month. The Chaska High School graduate ran the 8-kilometer course in 23-minutes, 45-seconds. As a junior last year, Sathre was the runner-up at the NCAA Championships.

Keller, a junior at the University of Minnesota - Morris, is recognized for her seventh-place finish in the women's race at the NCAA Division III Championships. The Paynesville High School grad ran the 6K course in 21:08, earning All-American honors. A year ago, Keller finished 19th at the meet.

November 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Maria Hauger and Bryon Schuldt are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for November 2011.

Hauger, a junior at Shakopee High School, is honored for winning her third-straight Minnesota State High School League Class AA girls' cross country title last month. Huager ran 14:05 over the 4-kilometer St. Olaf College course for a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Alexandria's Jamie Piepenburg.

Schuldt, a senior at Nevis High School, is recognized for winning the MSHSL Class A boys' title. Schuldt, who was ranked only seventh in Class A entering the meet outran the field for his first state title. He clocked 15:56 on the boys' 5-kilometer course.

October 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Hassan Mead and Stephanie Price are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for October 2011.

Mead, a senior at the University of Minnesota, is honored for his third-place finish in the Gold Division men's race at the Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational hosted by the U of M in September. Mead, an alumnus of Minneapolis South High School, ran the 8-kilometer Les Bolstad Golf Course circuit in 23 minutes, 49 seconds.

Price, a senior at the U of M, is recognized for her fifth-place finish in the Gold Division women's race at the Griak Invitational. Price, a Mankato Loyola graduate, ran the 6K course in 20:51.

September 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Jason Lehmkuhle and Amanda Smock are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for September 2011.

Lehmkuhle, a member of Team USA Minnesota, is recognized for his runner-up finish at the USA 20K Championships held in New Haven, Connecticut on Labor Day. Lehmkuhle covered the 12.4 mile race distance in one hour, 36 seconds. Three-time U.S. Olympian Abdi Abdirahman won the race in 1:00:12.

Smock, a graduate of Melrose High School, is honored for qualifying for the triple jump competition at the World Track and Field Championships held in Daegu, South Korea. Smock, who won the USA title in the event in June, marked a World Championships qualifying jump of 46-feet, 6 1/4 inches in August in Chula Vista, California which earned her a last-minute berth in the global championship. In Daegu, Smock finished 17th in her semifinal.

The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Ralph Maxwell and Maria Hauger are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for August 2011.

Maxwell, a 91-year-old who splits his time between Longville, Minnesota and Alamo, Texas, is honored for setting a new age-group world record in the decathlon for athletes over 90-years-old at the World Masters Track & Field Championships held in Sacramento, California last month. Maxwell scored 7069 points in the two-day, ten-event contest, overwhelming the previous world record of 3190 points set by Australia's Vic younger in 2003.

On the first day of competition, Maxwell ran 19.69 seconds in the 100-meters, long jumped 8 feet 7 1/2 inches, put the shot 20-3, cleared 3-4 1/2 in the high jump, and ran 1 minute, 49.24 seconds in the 400-meters. On day two, Maxwell ran a 21.62 in the 80-meter hurdles, threw the discus 45-10, pole vaulted 4-7, marked a javelin throw of 60-0, and ran 11:30.51 in the 1500-meters.

Hauger, who will be a junior at Shakopee High School this fall, is recognized for winning the national title at 3000-meters in the Young Women's division of the USATF Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships held in Wichita, Kansas last month. Hauger clocked 10:09.96 to win the event by 30 seconds.

July 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Amanda Smock and Trevor Yedoni are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for July 2011.

Smock, a Melrose native, is recognized for winning the triple jump at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon last month. The North Dakota State University alumnus marked a personal-best jump of 46 feet, 2 inches to win her first national title. If Smock can jump 46-3 1/4 yet this season, she can represent the USA at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea in August.

Yedoni, a senior at Benilde-St. Margaret's High School, is honored for his double victory at the MSHSL Class AA State Track Meet last month. Yedoni won the long jump with a leap of 23-0 and defended his high jump title with a clearance of 6-10.

June 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Janey Helland and Jason Beutz are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for June 2011.

Helland, a senior at Gustavus Adolphus College, is honored for winning the heptathlon title at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Delaware, Ohio in May. Helland, a Mapleton native, scored 5,061 points in the seven event contest which she won in the final event.

Beutz, a senior at the University of Minnesota - Duluth, is recognized for his runner-up finish in the pole vault at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Turlock, California last month. Beutz, a native of Foley, cleared 16 feet, 10-inches, which matched his personal best and the UMD school record.

The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Maggie Ewen and Michael Sandle are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for May 2011.

Ewen, a sophomore at St. Francis High School, is honored for breaking the Minnesota all-time high school record in the discus at the Saints Invitational earlier this month. Ewen marked a throw of 165-feet, 9-inches, which bettered Jessica Cagle of Grand Rapids throw of 162-4 from 2008.

Sandle, a senior at Eden Prairie High School, is recognized for his triple jump victory at the Hamline Elite Meet in April. Sandle established a new meet record with a jump of 50-3 1/4 which fell just short of Reondo Davis' 1999 state all-time best of 50-4.

The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Ralph Maxwell and Lauren Stelten are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for April 2011.

Maxwell, a 91-year-old who splits his time between Longville, Minnesota and Alamo, Texas, is recognized for winning five events in the men's 90-94-year-old division at the USA Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico last month.

Maxwell won the high jump at 3 feet, 5 1/4 inches, the long jump with 7-11 1/4, the triple jump with 17-9 1/2, the shot put with 23-2, and the five-event pentathlon competition with 3,952 points. His time in the pentathlon 60m hurdles of 15.39 seconds broke his own world record in the event.

Stelten, a senior at Minnesota State University, Mankato, is honored for her victory in the pole vault at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships also contested in Albuquerque last month. The Chaska High School graduate cleared 13-feet, 6 1/2 inches to win her first NCAA title.

March 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Ben Blankenship and Samantha Sonnenberg are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for March 2011.

Blankenship, a University of Minnesota senior, is honored for defending his Mile Run title at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships last month in Champaign, Illinois. The Stillwater High School alumnus won the race in 4 minutes, 1.14 seconds. Two weeks later, at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Blankenship was the runner-up at 3000-meters.

Sonnenberg, also a Minnesota senior, is recognized for winning the pole vault at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. The Waukesha, Wisconsin native cleared 13 feet, 7 1/4 inches in winning her first-ever conference crown. At the NCAA Championships, Sonnenberg earned All-American honors by finishing 7th in the event with a 13-11 1/4 clearance.

February 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Katie McGregor and Jason Lehmkuhle are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for February 2011.

McGregor, a member of Team USA Minnesota, is honored for her 4th-place finish at last month's USA Women's Half Marathon Championships in Houston, Texas. McGregor, who won three USA road racing titles in 2010, including the USA 10 Mile held in conjunction with the Medtronic TC 10 Mile, ran one hour, 12 minutes and 13 seconds for the 13.1 mile distance.

Lehmkuhle, also of Team USA Minnesota, is recognized for finishing 5th in the USA Men's Half Marathon Championships also contested in Houston. Lehmkuhle ran the distance in 1:02:49. The race marked the fourth time Lehmkuhle has finished in the top-5 at the USA Half Marathon Championships in his career.

January 2011
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Morgan Place, Jesse Delgado and Connor Olson are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for January 2011.

Place, a junior at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, is recognized for her 5th place finish at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships held in Louisville, Kentucky in December. Place ran the 6-kilometer race in 21 minutes, 14 seconds, making her third-straight finish in the top-10 at the meet.

Delgado and Olson are recognized for runner-up finishes in their respective divisions of the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Hoover, Alabama last month.

Delgado, a Waseca resident, ran 10:17 in the 3-kilometer Midget Boys race for 11 and 12-year-olds. Olson, of Maple Grove, ran the 4-kilometer Youth Boys race for 13 and 14-year-olds in 13:02.
