Athlete of the Month

December 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Grant Wintheiser and the Wayzata High School girls' cross country team are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for December 2012.

Wintheiser, a sophomore at St. Olaf College, is honored for his 3rd-place finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships held in Terre Haute, Indiana in late November. The Sartell native ran the 8K course in 24 minutes, 36 seconds, leading the Oles to a 14th-place finish in team competition.

The Wayzata girls' cross country team is recognized for its 7th-place finish at Nike Cross Nationals, a national championship competition for high school teams held in early December. The 2012 MSHSL Class AA state champions tallied 232 points at the meet held in Portland, Oregon.

November 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Maria Hauger and Wayde Hall are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for November 2012.

Hauger, a senior at Shakopee High School, is honored for winning an unprecedented fourth-straight Class AA girls' cross country title at the HSHSL State Meet in Northfield earlier this month. Hauger ran the 4K course in 13 minutes, 42 seconds.

Hall, a senior at Stillwater High School, is recognized for winning the boys' Class AA individual cross country title and pacing the Ponies to a team crown. Hall clocked 15:21 on the boys' 5K course.

October 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Linda Keller and Ben Sathre are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for October 2012.

Keller, a senior at the University of Minnesota - Morris, is honored for winning the Women's Maroon III division at the Roy Griak Invitational Cross Country Meet in Falcon Heights in September. Keller topped a strong NCAA Division III field, running 21 minutes, 49 seconds over the 6K course.

Sathre, a former University of St. Thomas star, is recognized for winning the City of Lakes 25K in September and setting a new state single-age record at the distance for 22-year-old runners. Sathre clocked 1:18:47 on the Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet course.

September 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Sherwood Sagedahl and Kathy Haubrich are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for September 2012.

Sagedahl, a 73-year-old from Fairmont, is honored for breaking the world masters age-group record for the M70 pentathlon - the division for men over 70-years-old. Sagedahl scored 3806 points in the event at the USA Masters Track & Field Championships in Lisle, Illinois in August. Sagedahl topped the existing record of 3,755 set by Germany's Gerhard Tillmann in 2009.

Haubrich, 53, of Shakopee, was recognized for being a member of two relay teams that established new American masters age-group records for women over 50-years-old in the 4 x 400-meter and 4 x 800-meter events. Haubrich's Athena Track Club team ran the 4 x 400 in 4:40.38 and the 4 x 800 in 10:45.23 at the USA Masters Championships.

August 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Shane Streich and Shaina Burns are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for August 2012.

Streich, a sophomore this fall at Waseca High School, is honored for winning the USA Track & Field Junior Olympic national title in the Intermediate Boys 1500-meters in July. Competing in Baltimore, Streich ran the distance in 3 minutes, 59.17 seconds. At the same meet, Streich also earned a silver medal at 3,000-meters.

Burns, a junior at Lakeville South High School, is recognized for winning the Intermediate Girls' heptathlon at the USATF Junior Olympics. Burns scored 4704 points in the seven-event contest that consists of the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meters, long jump, javelin, and 800-meters.

July 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Amanda Smock and Hassan Mead are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for July 2012.

Smock, a Melrose native who competed for North Dakota State University, if honored for winning the triple jump title at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials held in Eugene, Ore. last month. Smock marked a jump of 45 feet, 9 inches for the victory, which earned her a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.

Mead, a senior this spring at the University of Minnesota, is also recognized for his exploits at the Olympic Trials. Mead placed 11th in the 10,000-meters at the meet, running a school record and personal best of 27 minutes, 59.04 seconds. Mead later finished 8th in the Olympic Trails 5,000-meters, running 13:30.21.

June 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Rilwan Alowonle and Maggie Ewen are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for June 2012.

Alowonle, a senior at Park High School in Cottage Grove this spring, is recognized for his two record-breaking performances at the MSHSL Class AA State Meet in St. Paul earlier this month.

Alowonle ran the 110-meter hurdles prelims in 13.88 seconds, breaking the Class AA record in the event. He went on to win the events' final. Alowonle also won the 300m hurdles in a Class AA record 36.59.

Ewen, a junior at St. Francis High School, is recognized for defending her Class AA State Meet titles in the girls' discus throw and shot put. Ewen threw 171-feet, nine inches in the discus, setting a new Class AA record. She also marked a 48-4 shot put.

May 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Hassan Mead and Jamie Piepenburg are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for May 2012.

Mead, a senior at the University of Minnesota and a Minneapolis South High School alumnus, is recognized for breaking the 38-year-old U of M school record in the 10,000-meter run with his 28-minute, 12.74 second run at the Payton Jordan Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California in April. Olympian Garry Bjorklund held the previous record of 28:26.44 set in 1974.

Piepenburg, a senior at Alexandria High School, is honored for setting a new Hamline Elite Meet record in the girls' 3200-meter run with her 10:28.46 win last month in St. Paul. The mark is the fifth-fastest 3200-meter time ever run by a Minnesota high school girl.

April 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Mike Hutton and Anna VanWechel are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for April 2012.

Hutton, a junior at the University of St. Thomas, is recognized for winning the men's 800-meter title last month at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Grinnell, Iowa. The Apple Valley High School alumnus ran the race in one minute, 52.26 seconds.

VanWechel, a senior at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, is honored for her third-place finish in the women's mile at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships held in Mankato in March. The Fergus Falls High School graduate ran the distance in four minutes, 52.00 seconds.

March 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Amanda Smock and Harun Abda are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for March 2012.

Smock, a Melrose native who competed for North Dakota State University, is honored for winning the women's triple jump title at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Albuquerque last month. Smock marked a jump of 45 feet, 2 1/4 inches for the victory.

Abda, a junior at the University of Minnesota, is recognized for winning the 400-meter and 600-meter titles at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Lincoln, Nebraska last month. The Fridley High School graduate won the 400m in 46.51 seconds and the 600m in one minute, 15.86 seconds.

February 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Andrew Carlson and Michelle Frey are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for February 2012.

Carlson, a former University of Minnesota star and a member of Team USA Minnesota, is recognized for his sixth-place finish at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Team Trials held in Houston, Texas in January. Carlson ran the 26.2 mile race in two hours, 11 minutes, and 24 seconds.

Frey, a former member of Team USA Minnesota, is honored for her 22nd-place finish at the Olympic Trials Marathon. The University of Wisconsin alumnus ran the race in 2:37:03.

January 2012
The Minnesota Association of USA Track & Field is proud to announce that Jon Grey and Katie McGregor are USATF Minnesota's Athletes of the Month for January 2012.

Grey, a recently-signed member of Team USA Minnesota, is recognized for his victory at the USA Club Cross Country Championships held in Seattle in December. Grey ran the 10K course in 29 minutes, 38 seconds.

McGregor, also a member of Team USA Minnesota, is honored for her 3rd-place finish at the Las Vega Half Marathon in December. The University of Michigan alumnus ran a personal best one hour, 11 minutes, and 45 seconds in the race.
