New Records Set at 2008 USATF Minnesota Junior Olympic Championships

Twelve records were broken at the 2008 USATF Minnesota Junior Olympic Championships held June 21-22 at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Calvin Clark rewrote the sprint records for Intermediate Boys (born 1992-1993). Competing for ICAA/MN Breeze, Clark sped to a 10.98 100m finish, eclipsing the old record of 11.32 set by Matt Johnson in 1998. Clark went on to remove Johnson’s 200m record of 22.47 by just bettering it to 22.46. Showing his versatility, Clark completed the sprint trifecta by establishing a new 400m record for Intermediate Boys with a time of 51.04, lowering the previous record of 51.11 set by Leon Cheneyon in 2006.

Shane Streich of Waseca Area Track Club ran away from the field in the Midget Boys (born 1996-1997) division with middle distance records. In the 800m, Streich’s time of 2:26.27 bettered Joshua Wiseman’s 2002 previous record time of 2:27.87. Streich smashed the long-standing 1500m record time of 5:03.6 established by Joey Haas in 1990 by crossing the finish in a time of 4:56.70.

Shaheed Hickman of Track Minnesota Elite sped to a new Midget Boys 400m record time of 59.81, bettering Clarence Suttle’s 2001 effort of 59.96

Derrick Mora of Northstar United cleared the ten 39” hurdles in the Intermediate Boys 110m High Hurdle race in a time of 16.12, improving on Brock Spandl’s 2004 time of 16.40.

Sean King won the Young Men’s (born July 28, 1989-December 31, 1991) 100m sprint in 10.72 to oust Lamonta Bronaugh’s 1999 time of 10.77 from the record list.

Kelly Fogelson of Track Minnesota Elite won the Youth Girls (born 1994-1995) 200m hurdle event in a time of 30.73 to knock off the 2007 time of 31.41 from Alyssa Warren.

In the field events, three new records were set.  Bantam Girl (born 1998 and later) Kailyn Canady of Hospitality House threw the 300 gram Turbo Javelin 14.52m (47’8”) to improve on Janessa Palmer’s 12.94m throw in 2004.

Rumeal Harris of Hospitality House triple jumped 13.42m (44’0.5”) to leap past Sean Primus’ longstanding Intermediate Boys record of 13.16m set in 1990.

Christian Kolb of Southern Minnesota Vault Club soared 4.34m (13’11.25”) in the Intermediate Boys Pole Vault to take the record from Brock Spandl with his mark of 3.97m set in 2004.
